The Cosmic Lounge presents Nu-Jazz Music: ‘Day 2001′ by Atjazz. (My morning exercise routine. Happy New Year!)
“Martin Iveson moved from the North-East of England to the Midlands city of Derby in 1991 to take a position as in-house musician for the then fledgling video games company that went on to produce the Tomb Raider series of games. Not content with sound tracking one of the world’s biggest computer games, Martin’s passion for music saw him set up his own studio and record label, from which he could give a free rein to his personal music aspirations.
Martin became Atjazz and Mantis Recordings’ first release was his Story EP.
The positive reactions to Story inspired his debut album That Something, which was released in 1998, and established the Atjazz name, going on to be licensed in Italy by Irma Records and Japan by Sony.
Mantis Recordings moved onwards building a solid catalogue of releases from mainly local artists, and the Atjazz albums Labfunk and Labresults followed. While tracks on his debut album hinted at a particular Atjazz sound, it was these following albums that cemented his reputation as a world class producer with a distinctive yet diverse method to his sound, and making him an in demand producer, remixer and DJ.
For Mantis he played a big role in the sound of Brooks debut album You, Me & Us, produced the album That Day for Magic Number, and works closely with Mantis’ jerkbeat master Clyde. His vast studio knowledge isn’t limited to just dirty disco, techno soul and hip hop beats either; he’s turned his hand to twiddling the knobs for everyone from acoustic soloists to post hardcore indie rockers.
His brand new album Full Circle sees Atjazz working with many superb artists. Peter Wraight, who played a big part of the sound of Labfunk brings his skill and knowledge once again, while singers Ernesto, Clara Hill, Sarah-Jane Morris, Dawne B, Amalia, and Mr J all deliver stunning performances, plus there’s some mighty word wielding from Cee Rock and Hernandez.
Superproducer Charles Webster is also joining forces with Atjazz, on a project called Version. They already have several remixes in the bag and a EP’s coming soon for both Miso and Mantis. While for Jazzanova’s prolific Sonar Kollektiv label, Atjazz has produced songs for the new Clara Hill album, and released the massive track For Real on their sub label Innervisions.
A busy man indeed, and there’s plenty more coming from his studio in the shape of a collaborations album which will see Atjazz hooking up with some big guns of house music.”

The Cosmic Lounge presents Acid Jazz Music: ‘Love Is Here To Stay’ by Aqua Bassino.
“Edinburgh’s Jason Robertson played bass for numerous jazz-funk bands before settling into the studio to focus on all things electronic. Settling on the Aqua Bassino moniker, he released his ‘96 debut EP, Swirl, on France’s foremost electronic imprint, F Communications. Three more EPs followed (Deeper, Pools, and Waves) before Robertson released his ‘91 debut album, Beats ‘n’ Bobs. Skillfully blending elements of jazz, soul, and blues, the album features Scottish saxophonist Martin Kershaw, U.K. jazz singer of the year Niki King, and African diva Nahawa Doumbia, who has worked extensively with Frederic Galliano. “Baby C’Mon” was released as single in early ‘02 with remixes by deep house don Ron Trent and Detroit electro pioneer Soul Designer (Fabrice Lig). In his spare time, Robertson produces laid-back house and downtempo for Statra under his Jay Salino alias.”

The Cosmic Lounge presents Acid Jazz Music: ‘Bad Luck’ by Rainer Trüby Trio.
“Formerly of A Forest Mighty Black, DJ Rainer Trüby built his reputation as a connoisseur of music past and present at the Root Down club night in Freiburg, Germany. Once a month he spins an eclectic blend of traditional bossa nova, modern organic breakbeat, and future-leaning jazz to a packed crowd of beat-hungry clubbers and martini-sipping soul sophisticates. Trüby garnered a solid following for his impeccable skills behind the decks and the respect of pioneers such as Gilles Peterson, LTJ Bukem, and Peter Kruder (Kruder & Dorfmeister), the last of whom went so far as to dedicate a track to the budding German jock. “But hold on a sec, doesn’t a trio require three musicians?” you holler. That’s where Christian Prommer and Roland Appel come in. Best known for their jazz-driven drum and bass as Fauna Flash and their slinky mid-tempo beats as Voom:Voom (with Peter Kruder), the two teamed up with Trüby in the late ’90s to create the Trio.
Released on Compost, “A Go Go” and “Carajillo” became huge hits on the modern jazz and leftfield breaks scenes, raising the Trio’s profile to astronomical heights. Following a slew of successful remixes for the likes of Peace Orchestra, Mr. Gone, Bobby Matos, and Frederic Galliano, !K7 Records asked the three to select and mix a DJ-KiCKS comp, putting them in the same league as Nightmares On Wax, Stereo MCs, DJ Cam, and Carl Craig. Originally released as a single, the Zero dB Remix of “Galicia” is featured on Compost 100 alongside some awesome jazz-house fusion from Kyoto Jazz Massive, Beanfield, Minus 8, and The Amalgamation Of Soundz.”

The Cosmic Lounge presents Nu-Jazz Music: ‘De Muse’ by Fragmentorchestra.
“Fragmentorchestra is the pairing of Italian jazz aficionados Luca Pernici & Giulio Vetrone. The result is a beautiful and up-tempo album of moods and grooves for some autumnal bliss. For Luca and Giulio, Jazz also means improvisation, which Luca Pernici explains. “A musician, in the moment at which improvisation occurs, is irrationally set free from any approach, creating a philosophy of composition without any given time or place”. The goal is just this, to preserve an improvised approach through breaking down beats and notes but still achieving the variety of an orchestra or better yet, a Fragment Orchestra…
Luca Pernici was born in Reggio Emilia in 1969. At the tender age of eight he was already carrying out preparatory studies at the local musical school “Achille Peri” and when he turned eleven, he started to take piano and solfeggio lessons whilst his passion for music and for technology pushed him to find spaces in recording studios. Later with more than ten years experience in the studio as a producer, arranger and composer his passion transformed into the desire to open his own studio in 2000: the ‘NuSound musiclab’. This became the catalyst for concentrating on and interacting with other artists and his own productions with a view to broadening his views for new horizons. It was under these conditions that he met Giulio Vetrone and the pair set up the MaffiaSoundSystem which led the pair ultimately to the beats and jazz permutations of Fragmentorchestra.
The extensive productions coming out of NuSound musiclab have inspired Luca Pernici to perform his creations to the public and for those curious of what will come next all we can say is that in the same manner that Brazilian music has influenced many artists, Senegal has captured Pernici’s mind and soul. But for the meantime set yourself free amongst the cool reflections of the Fragmentorchestra.”

The Cosmic Lounge presents Nu-Jazz Music: Atjazz’s remix of ‘Sneakin” by Jaffa.
“Mr. David Kakon aka Jaffa was discovered by Nude Recordings (Canada), then cared by StereoDeluxe in Europe. David was born in Montreal 1976, has an honours degreee in Pure Mathematics, 15 years of classical piano training behind him and besides that became a complete organ maniac, collecting vintage keyboards and producing his own music on such instruments and machines as the Fender Rhodes, Moog MultiMoog, Roland Alpha-Juno2, Waldorf Pulse, Hammond B3, Hohner Clavinet and Wurlitzer EP. Tracks that embody layers of sexy, sleazy chords and riffs over chunky beats and basslines. Laid back rhythms along side screaming Hammond organs, Jaffa’s tracks are inspired by gifted artists as Taj Mahal, Ramsey Lewis, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Herbie Hancock, Mose Allison, John Coltrane, Bill Evans and BookerT.Jones. David himself describes his sound as “a sort of Fat Albert meets Emmanuelle on a beach in a Tahiti type thing”…”

The Cosmic Lounge presents Nu-Jazz Music: Les Gammas’ remix of ‘Snowblind’ by Minus 8.
“Minus 8 masters the whole spectrum of Downbeat, Drum & Bass and Nu-Jazz. There are only a few internationally known DJs, producers and remixers from Switzerland. Robert Jan Meyer, aka Minus 8, is one of them. As a leading man in this group, his name is mentioned together with the names of Alex Attias (aka Beatless / Mustang / Catalyst / Bel Air Project) and the Straight Ahead label posse.
Robert Jan Meyer is an Architect and the brother of a well-known Swiss rave promoter. He started to make music at the end of the 80’s, first as a bass-player in a Funk-band, but soon his fascination with Midi-equipment led to experiments with a keyboard and sampler. At the beginning of the 90’s, Robert launched his Minus 8 project as a slow and peaceful answer to all the Plus 8 (on a turntable) speed madness that was prevalent in club music at the time.
By 1993 he also started DJing, playing mostly Acid-Jazz, Rare Groove, Funk, and Hip-Hop. Since then, Robert has consistently supported Swiss club culture with all his talents. He’s also toured as support for big UK names like Goldie, Grooverider, Hype, Krust, Storm, Bad Company and Adam F. And now he’s in-demand as a remixer. As all that wasn’t enough, he’s also found time to put together a great series of compilations - “Science Fiction Jazz”
The first ever Minus 8 release, “The Sweetest Sounds,” was the actually the first release on DJ Cam’s Paris-based label Inflammable. In 1997, Minus 8’s first album “Beyond,” followed (also on Inflammable), and received excellent reviews. “Beyond” was followed by a second album, “Beyond Beyond” for UK label Higher Ground (part of Sony UK). The English Trip-Hop and Drum & Bass scenes influenced both of these albums.”
